Getting ahead of the Winter Weather

Prepare Your Landscape for the Upcoming Winter Storm in Georgia

Winter weather is on its way to Georgia, and while our state is not typically known for harsh winter conditions, occasional storms can bring freezing temperatures, ice, and even snow. As we prepare ourselves and our homes for the cold, it’s important not to forget about our landscapes. A little preparation can go a long way in protecting your plants, trees, and outdoor spaces from winter damage. Here are some tips to help you get your landscape storm-ready:

1. Protect Your Plants

  • Mulch for Insulation: Add a layer of mulch around the base of your plants to insulate their roots. This will help regulate soil temperature and retain moisture, protecting plants from sudden freezes.
  • Cover Sensitive Plants: Use frost cloths, burlap, or even old blankets to cover sensitive shrubs and plants. Make sure the coverings are secured to the ground to trap heat.
  • Move Potted Plants Indoors: Bring container plants inside or to a sheltered area like a garage or porch to protect them from freezing temperatures.

2. Prune and Clean Up

  • Prune Dead or Weak Branches: Ice accumulation can cause weak branches to snap, potentially damaging your property or other plants. Prune any dead or fragile branches ahead of the storm.
  • Clear Debris: Remove fallen leaves, sticks, and other debris from your yard to prevent it from freezing to the ground and creating a mess when the storm is over.

3. Prepare Trees for Ice

  • Inspect Trees for Stability: Look for signs of disease or instability in large trees. Weak trees are more likely to topple under the weight of ice.
  • Brace Young Trees: Use stakes or ties to support young or newly planted trees, helping them withstand strong winds and ice.

4. Protect Your Lawn

  • Avoid Walking on Frozen Grass: Frozen blades of grass are brittle and prone to damage. Minimize foot traffic on your lawn during and after the storm.
  • Aerate if Possible: If you have time before the freeze, aerating your lawn can improve drainage and help prevent ice from suffocating the grass.

5. Safeguard Outdoor Features

  • Drain Irrigation Systems: Shut off and drain any irrigation systems to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
  • Store Outdoor Furniture: Bring in or securely cover patio furniture, garden decor, and other outdoor items to protect them from ice and wind.
  • Wrap Exposed Pipes: Cover any outdoor faucets or exposed pipes with insulation to prevent freezing and damage.

6. Plan for After the Storm

  • Inspect for Damage: Once the storm has passed, check your plants and trees for any signs of damage. Prune broken branches and remove ice carefully to avoid further harm.
  • Water When Needed: Winter storms can dry out plants. Water them lightly when the soil has thawed to keep them hydrated.
  • Replenish Mulch: If the storm washes away or compresses your mulch, replenish it to maintain root protection.

Georgia’s winters can be unpredictable, but with the right preparation, you can minimize the impact of a winter storm on your landscape. Taking these steps now will help ensure that your yard emerges healthy and vibrant when spring rolls around.
